Disappeared Villages of the East Riding

SPEAKER: Professor Barbara English

Disappeared Villages of the East Riding

This talk is now available online - please click link above.

here is something about lost villages that appeals to us – that under those grassy humps and bumps, or lying at the bottom of the sea or estuary, there are forgotten places once full of people, animals, noise, love, life, sickness and death, now all gone.  In the East Riding and Hull, there are some 130 of these sites, an astonishing number, including a whole town washed away by the Humber.

Most people around here now live within 4 miles of a lost village.  Barbara English in an illustrated talk will speak of why these places were abandoned and in which century, and she will explain what evidence there is for the life of those long-gone and unremembered villagers.
