The St. Finbarr - ‘The quiet disaster’

- Speaker Brian Lavery

15 Whitefriargate, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU1 2ER

On Christmas Day, 1966, a terrible explosion ripped through the British Super Trawler St. Finbarr - 10 of her crew of 25 were killed instantly and two more souls perished in the rescue bid.

For two days, still ablaze, St Finbarr was towed towards Newfoundland but she sank within sight of the shore, in spite of the courage and superlative seamanship of the rescue vessel Hull stern trawler, Orsino, commanded by the remarkable Skipper Eddie Woodridge.
